Heating a sauna costs less than you think

A typical family sauna heats up for less than 1 KM. We worked out the real electricity consumption — and collected some tips on reducing it further.

What does heating a sauna actually cost?

Many people assume heating a sauna is a luxury that eats electricity. In practice, a sauna’s power consumption is nowhere near as high as it seems. Take a 4.5 kW sauna as an example (a sauna for 2 people).

For two hours of use the consumption is just 9 kWh (4.5 kW × 2 hours). At an electricity price in Bosnia and Herzegovina of 0.16 KM per kWh, that is only 1.44 KM for two hours of sauna.

So enjoying a sauna for two people, for two hours, costs less than two KM. That is about what a coffee in a café costs — heating a sauna is affordable and not something to worry about on your electricity bill.
